The U.S. debut of singer Minako Yabe, Bamboo Ring, captures her musical journey from the jazz culture of Japan through the eclectic vibrancy of Boston.
Minako Yabe, an aspiring Japanese artist hailing from Katsushika, Tokyo, earned spots singing with samba and numerous big bands by the early age of 20. She performed in several festivals, events, and as the main vocalist in carnivals in Asakusa and Takadanobaba. At age 26 she won the silver vocalist prize in the 27th Asakusa Jazz Contest. Minako's journey led her to Boston, where she was exposed to rock, pop, blues and gospel, which have all worked their way into her eclectic style. With a sweet-as-honey tone, and a lilting yet grounded vocal style, Minako's spirited ardor transcends the recording, translating well.
A mixture of Minako Yabe original tunes, and collaborations with Boston and Japanese based songwriters and musicians, Bamboo Ring takes the listener on a journey through the jazz clubs of Tokyo, to samba at countryside Japanese festivals, to the halls of Berklee College of Music, where rock bands practice across the hall from gospel choirs. Recorded and mixed by the new Boston-based start-up label, Capumo Records, the album generated early buzz with a successful Kickstarter campaign.
